“Paying our respects and paying for it a bit too!”

Friday, June 26th, 2009

No matter how hard we try to give both MJ and Farrah their respective due today…there are always haters who like to call the station and complain we aren’t giving Farrah enough attention, or Michael Jackson was a sicko and doesn’t deserve to be recognized at all. Many callers were just plain MEAN! Why can’t people just chill out?

Are there more people who are angry these days, or does it just seem that way? Maybe I am just more aware of it because I am in the bullseye of the target by being on the radio; but I really don’t get everyone’s rampant anger.

Anger is such a self-consuming force. It eats away at the very core of your being and then spews out on anyone in its path. I hope that it isn’t making a meal out of you. If so, you need to stop and ask yourself why. I even pray you can be still and keep swallowing back the venom, and learn to overcome the destructiveness of the behavior. After all, we are really only renting this space on earth and we stay here for only as long as out Maker deems necessary. “Love thy neighbor….”, that’s what the ultimate landlord instructed of us. Give it a shot! Who knows, you might actually like the space you’re leasing!

Radio Roulette

Friday, June 19th, 2009

This is a gypsy’s life-this radio business. We all (except for Dino) have experienced the many stops along the way in a long radio career. I have worked at 11 radio stations in 26 years. Many for as short a time as 8 months, because I outgrew my surroundings; others for as long as 13 years because I thought it was a home. Along the way, there have been many formats, morning partners, and experiences. Not every relationship has ended wonderfully, but they never were so completely cruel that I ever lost my love for the business.
So, when our little buddy, our producer Stewie, announced that he was leaving the nest, I was happy for him. I have been there. I know the tug of looking beyond the horizon for the next big thing. Afterall, life is about the journey and not the destination as we have all heard before. He will be missed but he will be fine in life, and so will we. Everything changes as it is supposed to happen.
We will find a new producer and you will probably fall in love with him or her too. Stewie will probably fall in love with his next opportunity. It is a constant….it is referred to as radio roulette. Sometimes the game ends great-other times it is disastrous! It is the chance you take to grow in this or any business.
Dino and I have been together now for 4 1/2 years (God save me!), and we continue to grow and learn about each other everyday. In a lot of ways we have only just begun! And this gypsy has stayed put here for awhile for many reasons: the kids are happy here, it is home for us all, and of course the main reason-I still need to figure out DINO! This could take a big dose of time!!!!
Thank you for taking the journey with me!

The “Woman’s Day” Marriage Survey…not the best of news!

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

The good news/bad news is out on the state of marriage in America, and it is bound to start some chatter. According to “Woman’s Day” magazine and AOL, married women aren’t so sure they would do it all over again if given the chance. But wait! Before you “throw the baby out with the bathwater” so to speak, take heart in the results that showed most women who are married don’t plan to give up on their marriage.
The results are eye opening to say the least. Most of the 35,000 surveyed, married women, 72% in fact, say they have considered leaving their marriage at one time or another, and 57% say they aren’t sure they would marry the same spouse if they had it to do all over again. The silver lining is the response from 71%, who say despite their discontentment, they intend to ride the marriage out to the end.
So, what can we gather from all of this? That’s hard to say really. Either there are a lot of upset married women out there or maybe the married one’s are content enough not to answer a survey.
And hey…I am not above pointing out the fact that there might be just as many men who could answer a survey the same way if asked. So, draw from the survey whatever you will. One thing is for certain, “Womans Day” knows how to sell magazines!

Stop! Before you send that real time photo of you and the kids on the beach to everyone on your social network, have you considered who else might be seeing it? Is there a burglar lurking in your friend list who wants to know just when you left, where you are, and when you are coming back?
It is happening in these internet times of ours. Daily, people’s lives are turned upside down because they divulged too much personal information online!
Yes, it’s fun showing your close friends and family the jumbo platter of crab you destroyed at “Pirate Pete’s”, but the only one who will be crabby will be you when you come home to a ransacked house! Beware!

That Tiger!

Monday, June 8th, 2009

Golf fan or not, everyone who has ever seen Tiger play can agree that he is in a league all his own. His performance at the Memorial this year was amazing! Going into the final round he was four back and my father uttered the phrase people say time and time again when tournaments are winding down and he has some catching up to do: “Tiger’s in the hunt”! How right my dad was!

Sunday’s performance was amazing! He is unlike anyone else in the field right now. His laser concentration is unflappable. Is that they key to his success? Even his own caddie, Steve Williams, made the comment that he doesn’t believe Tiger is that much better than anyone else but he plays better down the stretch. Whatever it is, like golf or not-it’s hard not to like the achievements of Tiger!

For me the barometer for measuring the appeal of Tiger is the admiration my father has for him. My dad is going to be 80 this year and we followed Tiger around, hole after hole, hour after hour, day after day! Have my dad’s allegiances switched from the Jack of old to today’s Tiger? No-he still loves Jack, but even my aging dad would admit he’s been bitten by the Tiger!

Here comes the Memorial! Get out your Wallets!

So Jack’s tournament is in town. This is THE event where the golf enthusiasts and the social butterflies who pretend to be golf enthusiasts gather for the next four days. This year there has been some concern that the cost of the tickets would impact attendance. Let’s face it…it is a pricey event! I know this first hand from my adventures in trying to buy tickets for family members. Believe me, if there is an attendance concern you wouldn’t know it by the hoops you have to jump through to get a coveted golden ticket to the Golden Bears’ tourney!

First of all, if you want a badge for the run of the tournament, Thurs. through Sunday , that will run you $155 + tax, direct from the tournament itself. There are no single day tickets, so you must buy a weekly badge. Not a bad deal if you want to go all 4 days, but very few people do. Besides that, I do have four badges I would need  for just one or two days and that is crazy expensive!

Then, there are the brokers who will sell you a single day ticket…but with tax- that will run you around $100 and then you must pick it up and return it to their badge center. OK, here’s the rub! They will charge you the shipping costs of $24.95 anyway-even though it isn’t being shipped and you are picking it up. So, a one day ticket will run you $125 and you have to do all the legwork! What a ripoff!

I still haven’t decided which way to go for family members yet. I guess I will base it on how nice each one has been to me! The “very kind” will get the weekly badges, while the unappreciative will get the ones you get gouged for and run around all weekend juggling “pick up” and “drop off” schedules. Of course, I am kidding, but it sounds about as fair and makes as much sense as the tournament pricing system!
